Come join the Geo-Photo-Scavenger Hunt - on Platial

The basic info:

1. The list of items is below!

2. you can start as soon as you get this list, judging will take place at the Platial party. We will have a local Portland winner, this person needs to be here in person (read about the Party below the list) to win. We will also be holding the contest internationally, and those entries will be tallied later that night. The non local participants will have the same cut off time as the local users (5:30pm April 11th, 2006 PST) Any Places added to the site after that time will not be scored.

2.5 You don't have to be the original photographer. And, you will need to score yourself: some time before the deadline, you should add up your points and declare them in the description of your map. We will go ahead and confirm the scores of the top several maps, but it's just going to help us out on time a huge amount. Thanks. :)

3. to submit your entry, register at http://Platial.com/register (free), "create a map" with the word "scav" somewhere in the title (so we can find all the maps). it's also best to send us an email linking to the map , so we can make sure not to miss it. leave a comment here with a link to your map.

4. plot the photos on the map (be as close as you can) as Places (just click the 'add a place' button to get started). You need to title each Place with the scavenger hunt item(s) that the photo contains. So if you have a photo of the 'tip jar' and 'roller skates' in one Place, the Place should be titled "tip jar & roller skates"

5. focus on the scores of the items, not just the quantity of items. you can have multiple items covered in one photo but the title must contain the items to get points for them.

6. winner is the person with the most points. The prizes will be great, seriously!

7. all determinations about what counts and doesn't count will be judged on a partially impartial basis and will not be subject to review. it's all in fun anyway.

We recently had a team building exercise in Los Angeles, it was a lot of fun. It was a scavenger hunt by Watson Adventures, and it was a really positive experience. I would reccomend it to anyone.

This was a lot of fun, and a welcome distraction to some unpleasant and stressful conditions here. (Not the least of which is the relentless rain.) With the exception of nineteen items, all the photographs are my own.

I can't find a photo of a plastic horse tied to a curb, or a power outlet outdoors, but I got everything else on the list. Now to go back and tag them all. (Jason, is there some keystroke that will add a single tag to an entire list? Gosh, that would be nice.)

: D

Thanks for the fun game, y'all.

Well, finding all the items was fun, uploading all the images. . . not so much. But I'm in!

I hope I have time to map out all that I've got.

Alas, I will miss the party--kind of a long commute--have fun!

I am having a problem viewing all my places. I know I added a place and forgot to add it to the Scavenger map, but I am unable to see more than a half dozen places or so.

Help?

regarding the photographer details, let's say that you were in texas when 9/11 happened (one of the items on the list) but you don't have any photos of your own from austin, we are saying that in a case like that , it is ok to just go find an appropriate photo of austin to use.

I've got 27 of my own photographs at this point, and I don't understand the bit about you not having to be the original photographer.

Can you explain that some more, please?

Thanks.

Holy crap! I had no idea y'all were right across the street!

I'd join the hunt if I weren't going to be in China. I'll try to send some of the other Panic boys over!

for those of us no longer in portland...what to do about the Made in Oregon and Expose Yourself To Art lady?

good question laura, i we had assumed it was all about you being the original photographer, but, there really would be no way for us to verify this kind of thing, so, let me be clear, you do not have to be the original photographer, although, technically speaking, it's not encouraged that you pass off someone else's photo as your own, neither is it recommended that you violate any copyright laws in the process. Have at it.

wait, so do they have to be original photographs? For instance, if I was in Colorado Springs on 9/11/01, but I don't have a picture of Colorado Springs, could I upload one that I find on the Internet?

dear me, I'll have infinite respect for the person who actually finds and photographs all of this stuff!
