we're happy to announce the launch of neogeography.net [http://neogeography.net], an online forum for the discussion of neogeographic theory and practice.

What is really new about a lot of the projects that are happening right now is the technology. People have been making maps, annotating maps, mashing up data sets on maps, and sticking map pins on the cities they have visited forever.

The nature of the internet and the new tools which allow people (even those who aren't particularly computer savvy) not only to do these kinds of projects, but especially to share them is what is truly new.

The most powerful thing about the internet is that it allows people to share information immediately and easily. It brings subcultures together. It allows all of these people who have been tinkering with maps their whole lives to talk to each other and show off and inspire each other.

A lot of the map geeks I know are not even into computers. They're the same kinds of people who love rare books and who might feel a little wary of machines. Some technophobes, even. I wonder if the draw of these new technologies will be strong enough to bring people like that into the online community.
