This year nearly 15,000 user created maps were made on Platial. Topics range from world history to local food. Here are our biased picks for the Platial 2006 Map Awards. Disagree? Good, we love that. If you feel we missed a great map, please post it here in the comments since we had to literally drag ourselves away from four days of obsessive search, discussion and review. We're sure there are many fantastic maps that we didn't get to review so feel free to let us know.
Mapper Of The Year: Defines Mapumentary Genre
Baostar has created 37 maps this year. Each map brings the reader closer into the world as Baostar sees it. Each one uses place and map to share an insight about a specific facet of life. He documents place in a way that embodies neogeography, where human perspective and social interaction supercede latitude and longitude. Baostar has created a new genre which has inspired us all, that of Mapumentary.

We looked at popular maps from around the world and
reviewed about 2000 from this list. Several factors were considered
including; comprehensiveness, quality of posts or concept, meeting the
needs of a variety of neogeography use cases for social mapping and in
some cases based on the maps ability to spark a movement. For example
the original Fallen fruit map spawned many great similar maps in
different cities. While we do not speak every language included here,
we were able to translate many thanks to Babel Fish from AltaVista.
This has been a truly inspiring year- thanks all for participating- Happy Mapping.

Wow, what an honor! When I discovered Platial, my instinct was to plot "personal coordinates" that make up the physical world around me. There are so many inspiring maps, the one that will take you on a journey or give you a glimpse into other people's lives I must credit. The ones you listed here are outstanding indeed. Great work, Platialites! Give us more to see.

not only is it an honor and a privilege to have BOTH of my maps recognized by the platial staff, but to be named an awardee on my birthday makes it even more special!
thanks to tracy and all the others who've helped smooth out the rough edges whenever i seemed to get stuck :)

I'd like to thank any and all alcoholics in my life
[you know who you are], my non-alcoholic friends who
push me to drink cause 'you're just more fun', and all
the extraordinarily tolerant bartenders I've had the
pleasure of knowing. Oh, and big props to my liver...I
couldn't do it without you.

Thanks Platial!

God knows how much fun I've had with the maps, and especially with my "labor of love," the map letting people know about chefs who support their local farms.
Thanks, Platial!

One of the many reasons that Affordable Florida Homes. Inc should be your home
builder of choice is that they stand by the strength and solidity of every home they build. A solid, steel reinforced,
poured concrete Affordable Florida home will provide you with numerous benefits that you won’t find with other builders and
building materials.
